Calculating Areas for Sod

Use our formulas to determine how many square feet and rolls of sod you will need to cover your sodded area. You will need a piece of paper and a pencil. Draw the shape of the area you will be sodding and write down the measurements.

All of our sod is sold by 10 sq ft roll.

EXAMPLE: 1,000 sq ft divided by 10 = 100 rolls

Click on the shape that best describes your area.

How to calculate the area of a square

  • Measure the length and the width of your area in feet .
  • Multiply the two numbers together.
  • Total is the square footage required.

Example: 25’ x 25’ = 625 sq. ft. = 62.5 or 63 rolls

How to calculate the area of a rectangle

  • Measure the length and the width of your area in feet.
  • Multiply the two numbers together.
  • The total is the square footage required.

Example: 40 ’ x 15 ’ = 600 sq. ft. = 60 rolls

How to calculate the area of a circle

  • To calculate the sq. ft. of a circle, multiply the radius by the radius, then multiply by 3.14.
  • The radius is half the distance across the circle.

Example: 20’ x 20’ = 400 x 3.14 = 1,256 sq. ft. = 125.6 or 126 rolls

How to calculate the area of a triangle

  • To figure the area of a triangle, multiply the base by the height and divide by 2.

Example #1: 10’ x 10’ = 100 ’ ÷ 2 = 50 sq. ft. = 5 rolls

How to calculate the area of a trapezoid

A trapezoid is a 4 sided figure with one pair of parallel sides.

To find the area of a trapezoid,

  • A.) Measure the length of each parallel side in feet.
  • B.) Add the lengths together.
  • C.) Multiply the result by the height.
  • D.) Divide the result by 2

Example: 20’ + 10’ x 15’ ÷ 2 = 225 sq. ft. = 22.5 or 23 rolls

How to calculate the area of a parallelogram

  • A parallelogram is a 4sided shape formed by two pairs of parallel lines.
  • Opposite sides are equal in length and opposite angles are equal in measure.
  • To find the area of a parallelogram, multiply the base by the height.

Example: 25’ x 15’ = 375 sq. ft. = 37.5 or 38 rolls

How to calculate the area of an odd shaped oval

  • For example, a golf practice tee with bell shaped ends actually looks as if it is an irregular shape. However, it can be easily divided into a number of regular shapes—a rectangle and two half circles.
  • Therefore the formulas for the area of a rectangle and area of a circle can be used to calculate the area.

Example: Area of rectangle = length x width = 800 sq. ft.
Area of a circle = 10’ x 10’ = 100’ x 3.14 = 314 sq. ft.
Total Required = 1,114 sq. ft. = 111.4 or 112 rolls

How to calculate the area of an odd shaped area

  • Any area bounded by more than 4 sides may be divided into a series of triangles by diagonal lines and the area of each computed by multiplying the base times the height,, and dividing by 2. The sum of the triangles is the total square footage required.

Example: 10 x 8’ = 80 + 20’ x 7’ = 140 ÷ 2 = 110 sq. ft. = 11 rolls
